D3 MENS VB TOURNAMENT Posted 2009-04-15
HERE'S A NEWS ITEM COURTESY OF USAV:

If you are a fan of elite men's volleyball or you have friends that are involved in men's or boys' volleyball I strongly urge you to watch the 2009 Molten Division III Men's Invitational Volleyball Championship on April 17th and 18th. This will be the first time that the event will be broadcasted live. You can sign up to receive the webcast at

http://www.ramapoathletics.com/member/aa_signup.aspx

This tournament is on the endangered species list. As the popularity of men's volleyball continues to grow at the Division III level we have finally surpassed the required number of teams to mandate that the NCAA create a new National Championship tournament specifically for Division III men's volleyball. Within the next few years the Molten tournament will no longer exist and the NCAA will be taking over responsibilities for the tournament.

Tune in to watch as Ramapo College, Juniata College, UC Santa Cruz, and Stevens Technical Institute compete for the chance to become of one the final Molten D-III Men's Invitational Volleyball Championship teams in history. You are certain not to be disappointed with the elite level of play that you will see.

Please forward this to coaches, players, and fans of men's volleyball.

PAN AMERICAN CUP Posted 2009-04-01
USA Volleyball is hosting its first-ever Women’s Pan American Cup, which serves as a qualifying event into the 2010 FIVB World Grand Prix. The event, which will tentatively have three of the four semifinalists from the 2008 Olympic Games, is the largest international volleyball event hosted by USA Volleyball in terms of country participation. Brazil won the 2008 Olympic Games gold medal by defeating silver medalist USA in the title match, while three-time Olympic Games gold medalist Cuba finished fourth in the 2008 Olympic Games. All three teams are currently ranked in the top four in the current FIVB World Rankings.

Team USA has not hosted a women’s senior-level international tournament since the 1998 FIVB World Championship Qualifier tournament in 1998. Due to international scheduling and professional league commitments, matches on domestic soil have become a rarity with only seven contests against foreign teams in the most recent Olympic quadrennial (2005-2008).

2009 Pan American Cup is being run simultaneously with the USA Girls’ Junior Olympic Championships in Miami creating a major volleyball event.

Additional info is available on the USAV website - see logo on the IREVA home page.

Due to space limitations and planning needs, reservations are generally required for each event. While these events are primarily for JO clubs, adults may also attend the clinics on a space available basis. Thanks to the host clubs for their support in putting on these events.

R2 CERTIFICATION & LISTS Posted 2009-02-20
The process of posting R2 lists on the IREVA website has begun. The initial, incomplete lists should be updated several times in the next week until things are caught up. Subsequent updates will likely be weekly. As in previous years, Club Directors and Team Reps should plan on checking the lists regularly until all of their expected memberes are certified.

We apologize for the delay. Technical and personal issues have once again interfered with good intentions. We will not be able to to put R2 certification information into WEBPOINT [and on your membership cards] until a volunteer for the data entry task is found.

In addition, the text on the R2 information page has been revised to clarify that JOs must take the on-line test in addition to participating in a fellowship event or clinic.

MEMBERSHIP NEWS - UPDATES Posted 2008-11-19
The registration pages on the website have been recently updated. More information has been added about changes in fees (tryouts, one-days, upgrades, non-playing adults) and policies for 2008 / 09. A new section providing hints for new clubs and new Club Directors has been added.

USAV continues to make hardware and software changes to try to improve the system and the process. At this point, we can only apologize for any of the confusion and access issues that have occurred. Continue to provide feedback when things are not working or not clear!

One item of particular note concerning WEBPOINT is that background checks can now be processed with electronic signatures - less paperwork for individuals!

Club Directors and Team Reps - please be aware that there are new forms, new fees, and a new policy on club names and team names. There is also now a policy on JOs and Adult participation. Each of these items can be found on the FORMS & DOCUMENTS page of the IREVA website.

In particular, all submissions to the Assistant Registrars should include both a Transmittal Form and a Registration List Form - after the initial set-up of the clubs and teams – in order to facilitate their processing of membership application approvals.

NEWSLETTER Posted 2008-11-19
The Fall 2008 Newsletter is now available for your reading pleasure on the FORMS and DOCUMENTS page.

USAV RULES, RULEBOOKS, AND UNIFORMS Posted 2008-11-19
USAV’s 2008 / 09 summary of significant rules changes has been posted on the FORMS & DOCUMENTS page.

USAV’s 2008 /09 Rules Interpretation Bulletin # 1 is also posted on the FORMS & DOCUMENTS page. This document concerns the libero uniform, and provides graphic examples of acceptable and unacceptable color combinations.

In addition, the IREVA Uniforms Policy has been updated to reflect the latest USAV rule and interpretation, also posted on the FORMS & DOCUMENTS page. Changes are not significant. However, any teams considering purchase of new uniforms should read these items closely, and are encouraged to discuss the issues and obtain guidance from Hansen Leong, Referee Director.

USAV rulebooks are available. In general, there are approximately enough books to provide one-per-member. The primary method of providing rulebooks to JO clubs will be via clinicians at fellowship events. Rulebooks will be provided to adult clubs at selected tournaments and by request. Rulebooks are currently available from: Hansen Leong; Mike McNeil; Jim Bishop; Anna Turner; Hazel Goldstein; Mike Wingard; Patty Blacklock.

A MAJOR CHANGE FOR 2008/09 TOURNAMENTS - rosters for all IREVA tournaments must be printed from WEBPOINT, the member registration system. Club Directors and Team Reps must ensure that they have teams properly set up in the system. This policy is posted on the FORMS & DOCUMENTS page. This policy has been established by IREVA in order to better ensure proper membership and background checks for all participants in our tournaments. WEBPOINT rosters will also assist in tracking tournament results by ensuring use of proper team names and team codes!

If you are reading this page, you may have already noticed changes in many sections of the IREVA website. More are coming. Your feedback is welcome. Even better, your assistance and contributions can help website information be more useful and more timely.

EVEN MORE NEWS - 2008/09 Posted 2008-09-23
IREVA BOARD -

Hana Panek has been elected as Secretary. This leaves open an elected Director position. Anyone interested is invited to contact Patty Blacklock or another officer / director.

Betsy Marsh will be wearing two hats as both Insurance Director and Tournament Coordinator. This change is expected to simplify and expedite the tournament sanctioning process. Blaise Agnew is stepping down from his position as Insurance Director - his many years of service are greatly appreciated.

Chris Trombley is taking over from Betsy as Chair of the Adults Committee; he is also taking over from Mike McNeil in handling adult tournament results and as Chair of the Eligibility Committee.

See Help Wanted news item below - it is still valid, and probably always will be. There are any number of ways that our members could assist in making IREVA bigger and better by using their knowledge and skills in some small way in service to the Region or to other clubs and teams. Contact Patty Blacklock or another officer / director to discuss how you could help.

INSURANCE - USAV has not yet finalized insurance-related procedures and documents for the next season. A notice will be posted when they do so. In the interim, sanctions and insurance certificates obtained last season are good until 10/31/08.

IREVA is currently planning to host IMPACT clinics Friday 3/14/08 [before the NCAJ tournament] and Friday 4/25/08 [before JO Regionals]. CAP COACHES SUBSIDY POLICY REVISED Posted 2007-11-17

For many years, IREVA has had a policy of subsidizing coaches who obtain CAP certification. The goal was to improve the qualifications of coaches in IREVA, particularly among the JO teams, by providing a modest incentive for coaches to invest in the cost, time, and effort to obtain this training. To further promote coaches obtaining CAP training, IREVA hosted and financially underwrote a CAP clinic in January 2007.

At the September 16, 2007 IREVA Board meeting, the CAP subsidy policy was reviewed. Various issues were discussed, such as coaches who move or become inactive, and the complications caused by USAV requirements for continuing education. Pursuant to the continuing interest and support of the goal of improving the qualifications of coaches in IREVA, particularly among the JO teams, a significant revision to the CAP subsidy policy was adopted. It is expected that this policy will be reviewed annually and revised as necessary.

For the 2007 / 2008 season, IREVA will subsidize CAP-certified JO coaches indirectly, by providing a $50 rebate to each team at the JO Regional Championships with a CAP-certified head coach on their bench. The rebate will be limited to one per team, and each coach so identified will qualify for only one rebate, i.e. no double-dipping by being listed on more than one roster for any age group or gender. CAP certification will be determined by reference to USAV’s membership database.

JO coaches should take the steps necessary to finalize or update their CAP certification, and ensure that USAV updates their status in the on-line member registration system in advance of IREVA’s JO Regionals. JO coaches who qualify should ensure that their club directors are aware and request the rebate.

AES [formerly TIVA] FOR IREVA TOURNAMENTS 07/08 Posted 2007-11-17

AES will again be mandatory for ALL IREVA-sanctioned JO tournaments in 2007-08.  All JO Tournament Directors will use AES to accept entries and post results; all teams will use AES to enter JO tournaments. As in 2006-07, AES will be mandatory for both JO and Adult Regional Championship Tournaments [in addition to its use by USAV and other tournament hosts].

For 2007-08, AES will be optional for all adult tournaments. Adult teams should check with each TD, or check AES, to determine if they will do so. It is hoped that a number of TDs will try out the system to verify the benefits for themselves.

This system will again be available at NO COST to TDs or teams. IREVA has negotiated a contract with the service providers for a significant savings in both cost and convenience.

This approach to managing tournaments simplifies the entry process for everyone. It also simplifies results reporting.  The use of this system has been a big help with Regionals for the last two years, and many teams already use it for other tournaments. The overall assessment is that the shift to this system is a positive for the Region.

Tournament Directors will continue to apply for their event sanction on-line and work with Betsy Marsh (the Tournament Coordinator for IREVA). She will give approval for events, grant access to the system and help get things set up.

Once an event is set up, teams will be able to enter on-line via AES. TDs will be able to post the receipt of a check and confirm entry.  In addition, teams can print rosters from the system -- and everyone will be using their USAV/IREVA Team code to enter. Club Directors and team reps must ensure that they have their teams set up properly in the member registration system.

At the end of the event, TDs can upload all the results into AES. Club directors will see results automatically posted to their teams!

For those clubs / teams who have never used AES -- you can go to http://www.advancedeventsystems.com to register your club and to enter your players’ information. Once the information is there, it is simple to enter any event listed in the system.

Questions and comments can be referred to:

Hazel Goldstein - Juniors Director;

Betsy Marsh - Tournament Coordinator;

or other IREVA officers as needed.

USAV HP [girls] tryouts at Schenectady Posted 2007-02-07
IREVA will host USAV HP tryouts for girls on Sunday 3/18/07, 4-8 PM, at Union College in Schenectady. See the USAV website for more information and applications. The following information is copied from there for convenience. High Performance Tryouts Entry into all HP teams and camps is based upon selection by our cadre of HP coaching staff at one of many USA HP Tryouts. These tryouts are held across the country from January through April. Boys HP Tryouts are held from mid-January through the first weekend in March at approximately ten sites. Girls HP Tryouts are held during March and April at approximately twenty sites. 2007 FIVB/High Performance Program Age Groups Men/Boys' Age Groups Boys' USA Select (BSEL) - Boys born in 1991, 1992 and after Boys' Youth National Team (BYNT) - Boys born in 1989 and 1990 Men's Junior National Team (MJNT) - Men born in 1987 and 1988 Women/Girls' Age Groups Girls' USA Select (GSEL) - Girls born in 1992, 1993 and after Girls' Youth National Team (GYNT) - Girls born in 1990 and 1991 Women's Junior National Team (WJNT) - Women born in 1988 and 1989 Registration is required for participation at High Performance tryouts, and there is a tryout fee. To register, click on the Indoor Tryouts link off of the High Performance banner to the left of this page. Evaluation and Selection from HP Tryouts Through the HP Tryouts (which include three hours of court time), athletes are striving to be selected for the National-level Team or Camp in their age group. In the youngest age group (USA Select), athletes selected to the National-level Program will participate in a training camp for five-six days with the other top nineteen athletes selected from tryouts. That group will then be broken into two teams that compete in a four-day competition at the USA High Performance Championships. This will all take place in mid-late July, after the USA Junior Nationals Tournament. In the Youth and Junior Age groups, eighteen athletes selected to the National-level Program will join their respective Youth or Junior National Team for an extended training block, prior to a final squad of twelve athletes traveling to and participating in an international competition. In an even year (e.g. 2006) that competition is a NORCECA Qualifying Tournament for participation in World Championships the following year. Below the National-level program in each gender and age group (depending on year and participant numbers) there are one to four levels of camps that athletes can be selected to participate in from HP tryouts. These include A2 programs, A3 programs, Development Camps and A2 Development Camps.

Albany Area Adult Scorekeeping Clinic Posted 2007-01-31

There will be an Adult Scorekeeping Clinic at RPI from 3:00 to 5:00 in the Student Union Room 3602 (Top Floor). This is the last chance to take a clinic for the season in the albany area without attending a fellowship. If you plan on attending this clinic please email Karen Roth at karenroth@att.net.

We were unable to get a clinic for this weekend in Binghamton but there are fellowships planned for 2/17 in caroga lake (gabelerj@wufselementary.k12.ny.us) and 2/25 at SUNY Oswego (phanlon@alltel.net).

REGISTRATION AND BACKGROUND CHECKS Posted 2007-01-24
REMINDER ? all adults associated with a JO club MUST have a background check before they can participate in any USAV-sanctioned JO-related activities. This includes club directors, coaches, assistant coaches, chaperones, volunteers, referees, et al. Information on this requirement is found on the registration section and the forms section of the IREVA website. USAV-sanctioned events include PRACTICES and TOURNAMENTS. Failure to comply with this requirement will result in voiding the club?s USAV insurance coverage. There appears to be confusion concerning this requirement among some members and in the membership application and approval process, so IREVA is taking steps to address the identified problems.

1] Effective immediately, the registrar will HOLD all adult membership applications for JO clubs [with waivers submitted and fees paid] UNTIL the background check is cleared. Any such adults in pending status who are also players or referees will need to contact the registrar to address their situations on a case-by-case basis.

2] The registrar will send out a notification to all adults listing those whose background checks have cleared. JO club directors should verify that adults associated with their clubs have clearance. Any adult not on this list does not have a current background check. This information is also available to each JO club director in the registration system and on the listing recently posted on the website. JO club directors are responsible for ensuring that they are conducting their practices and other activities in compliance with this requirement.

3] Effective with IREVA JO tournaments beginning 2/17/07, team reps will be required to submit proof of background check clearance with their signed roster to the tournament director, and tournament directors will be required to submit such proof with the roster to IREVA. The grace period for this new requirement is applicable only in IREVA; other Regions have established their own procedures. Information on how to create such documentation from the registration system will be published and distributed immediately. The TD guide will be updated to reflect this new requirement. TDs must ensure that all teams are aware of this requirement via event flyers, AES event information details, email alerts, etc.

4] The enforcement date of 2/17/07 allows approximately 3 weeks for background check applications to be sent and processed. Please note that the background check application is to be sent to the registrar [Cameron Erickson, 37 Doorstone Dr. Latham, NY 12110], not the office [Anna Turner].

6] IREVA will be checking these rosters and will take appropriate action against any non-compliant teams or TDs.

Please note ? this is a matter of serious concern to USAV and IREVA, but all should understand that the applicable policies and procedures are still evolving, not just for volleyball, but also for all youth activities around the country. Some USAV regions are requiring photo IDs at their JO events, but IREVA has not gone that far yet. We will do our best to minimize the nuisance and aggravation for all while upholding our responsibilities. Thank you for your assistance in helping us to address this problem.

Please contact Cameron Erickson or Robin Sparks or Patty Blacklock as appropriate with any questions or feedback.

IMPACT clinic scheduled Posted 2007-01-23
ATTENTION COACHES! [And prospective coaches!] IREVA will be hosting an IMPACT clinic for all interested volleyball coaches Friday night, 03/16/07, 6 to 10 pm, in Saratoga Springs, NY. Mark this date on your calendar NOW! The location is the Courtyard by Marriott hotel. The cost will be $50 per person. Reservations are required. Contact Mike Wingard [Mlwingard@cs.com] to hold your spot. This is an opportunity for head coaches, assistant coaches, and potential coaches to learn current thoughts and ideas about the philosophy of coaching volleyball, as well as organization and technical skills development from a highly qualified USAV-certified instructor. Additional information about IMPACT and CAP [Coaching Accreditation Program] are available at the USAV website under education. If you already have IMPACT certification, perhaps it’s time to consider a refresher. Coaches should be aware that the course is regularly updated by USAV. IREVA requires JO teams to have IMPACT-certified coaches. USAV requires teams participating in JO national events to have IMPACT-certified coaches. IMPACT or equivalent is a prerequisite for CAP certification. It is anticipated that additional requirements for CAP certification and/or IMPACT renewal will be established by USAV and IREVA in the near future, so this is an opportunity to get a head start on meeting those new standards, as well as for personal development and increasing the integrity of our JO programs. IMPACT is not limited to JO coaches. Coaches for high school, college, and adult teams can benefit equally from this training, and their participation is strongly encouraged. All non-IREVA and non-USAV coaches are also welcome.

GHOST PLAYER POLICY Posted 2007-01-23
IREVA ghost player policy ? 2006/07

The following ?ghost player? policy was adopted by the IREVA Board several years ago in the interests of maximizing playing opportunities and eliminating numerous tournament management issues that occur when a player is injured, late, etc. This policy continues in effect for IREVA-sanctioned adult tournaments for 2006/07.

A team with only 5 players at a tournament [due to injury, late arrival, etc.] will be allowed [at their option] to play any remaining sets in pool [not playoffs], but will forfeit all sets in which they only have 5 players. Any sets in which the 5-player team plays will be officiated, and the 6th player?s ?ghost? will be accounted for with respect to front and back row positioning, service, etc.

The Tournament Director can also approve another USAV-registered player to play with the now 5-player team - even if that player is not registered with that team?s club ? with each such game resulting in a forfeit. The team can also have an unregistered player join the team as a one-time registration, and subsequent sets will not be forfeits. In each case, the team has until the beginning of playoffs to obtain a registered 6th player.

The ghost player policy does not apply in the case of the expulsion or disqualification of a player on a 6-player team. The team will be declared incomplete, the team will forfeit all sets in which they do not have 6 players, and such sets will not be played.

The following ?ghost player? policy, applicable to injury situations only, is in effect for IREVA-sanctioned JO tournaments for 2006/07.

IREVA will not permit JO teams to enter tournaments, or begin events, with five players.
If during the course of a tournament a player gets injured and cannot continue, the team may be permitted to play with five players if the Tournament Director and opposing teams? coaches agree to allow them to continue. The results of those games will all be considered forfeits by the team with five players.
