SANCTIONING AND INSURANCE
|
|
|
GENERAL - A sanction for a tournament or practice or other activity is an approval by IREVA to sponsor a USA Volleyball event and be covered by USAV insurance. Any team or club conducting or planning to conduct a volleyball tryout, trial, event or local, regional or zonal competition must seek such approval from the Region where the competition is to take place. Insurance coverage is provided for registered USAV members while participating in any sanctioned event. Non-sanctioned competitions are not covered by USAV insurance. Participants are not covered at tryouts or practices until and unless the practice is sanctioned.
INSURANCE COVERAGE There are two components of USAV insurance coverage sport accident and general liability. In summary, the sport accident policy provides up to $25,000 in individual medical benefits, with a deductible per incident of $250 when combined with the player's own personal insurance, or $1,000 when used alone. The general liability policy is for $1 million in coverage, which includes additional named insureds, i.e. facility owners and personnel, at no additional cost. Details on both policies are available from the Insurance Chair or at the link below.
PRACTICES - The sanctions for tryouts and practices are issued for a maximum of one volleyball season, beginning on September 1 and continuing through August 31. THIS COVERAGE PERIOD IS NEW FOR THE 2009/2010 SEASON. The sanction is valid only for the dates listed on the sanction. Only registered USA Volleyball members can request a USAV sanction for a practice or other non-competition event. Only currently registered persons may participate at a sanctioned event. By applying for a sanction, the Club Director/Team Rep is committing to adherence to all applicable rules, regulations and policies of USAV and IREVA, including limitation of participation in these activities to USAV members. Violation may void the insurance coverage.
The Insurance Chair cannot approve a tryout or practice sanction or start the process with our insurance carrier until the club registers. Early in the season, the turnaround time for a Certificate of Insurance is one week. Renewals [no changes in names, contact information, facilities, etc. from the previous year] are expedited. As the season progresses, this process can take up to three weeks. The process is described at the link below.
To sanction your practice and receive insurance coverage:
- Individuals should register with the Region to obtain USA Volleyball membership numbers.
- The Club Director/Team Rep fills out and mails the Sanction for Team Practice form to the Insurance Chair. This and other forms are available on the Web site.
- The Club Director/Team Rep fills out and mails the USAV Certificate of Insurance Request to the Insurance Chair [or emails or calls] with all required information.
TOURNAMENTS A club must have a current insurance certificate in order for a tournament sanction request to be approved by the Tournament Coordinator. Generally, a tournament facility will require an insurance certificate showing specific additional named insureds.
RISK MANAGEMENT Club Directors/Team Reps and Tournament Directors should read, be familiar with, and follow the guidance from USAV on risk management contained in the USAV Insurance Handbook. This document contains a good overview of liability issues and how they can be best addressed, in the interests of protecting all involved in USAV and IREVA activities. Minimizing claims against the USAV insurance policies keeps costs down for all, as well as avoids the associated headaches.
INCIDENT AND INJURY FORMS - At all sanctioned activities, Club Directors/Team Reps and Tournament Directors should have both the USA Volleyball Incident Report Form and the USA Volleyball Medical Claim Form on hand in case of an incident. In the event of an injury, fill out the forms as completely as possible. Keep one copy for yourself and send the originals to the Insurance Chair. If an accident involves a facility, they should also be given a copy. For additional forms, contact the Insurance Chair or the Regional Office. Forms may also be found on the IREVA Web site.
DIRECTORS AND OFFICERS INSURANCE IREVA maintains this additional coverage for the Region, its Officers and Directors. Clubs, teams and their members are not covered under this policy. USAV and IREVA recommend that clubs and teams consider obtaining this additional coverage. Additional information is available at the link below.
